I am a professor in the Department
of Computer Science at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth
(an excellent place to live and work). I am currently Head of Department.
After completing a degree in Computer Science that included an
industrial year working in the Petrochemical industry, I spent 7
years working for a software company, before returning to do research
in Aberystwyth.
The main emphasis of my research is in using model-based reasoning
to assist engineers performing design analysis tasks -
see Model Based Systems Group for details.
I set up FirstEarth, a company resulting from our research,
and was Managing Director for the first year. FirstEarth has recently been bought by Mentor Graphics Limited.
I used to do a lot of AI teaching, as that is where most of my research is,
but the experience of running FirstEarth Limited motivated me to concentrate on Software Engineering Teaching.
I teach courses on Software Engineering Lifecycle both here and on our MSc in Singapore.
What I like best about it is the Group Project, where we split students into groups to build real software
(I hope the students feel the same!).
